CONSERVE AND SUSTAINABLY USE THE OCEANS, SEAS AND MARINE RESOURCES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Oceans contain 97 per cent of the Earth’s water and represent 99 per cent of the living space on the planet by volume. Over three billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods, and careful management of this essential global resource is a key feature of a sustainable future.

There are national and international marine policies that aim to promote the sustainable use of oceans and coastal areas. Wageningen University & Research (WUR) helps state and international public institutions and commercial businesses better understand the effects of current ocean policies on ecosystems and biodiversity.

WUR aims to make tangible improvements to the conditions of life in the oceans and on the boundary between sea and land

We are also focusing on projects and studies that can make tangible improvements to life in the oceans and on the boundary between the sea and land. Examples include efforts to prevent the spread of waste and help protect and restore vulnerable areas.
